2018 is now closed and the one thing on every entrepreneurs mind is “How can I set myself up for Success in 2019?”
We know New Years resolutions are going to be the buzz right now, but any objective, task or goal you set for yourself will only succeed if you set up the foundations to reach your business and personal goals in 2019.
Step One: Set some Benchmarks and take an assessment of 2018. Every entrepreneurs first port of call in the new year is to start with Goal Setting! We say start with some bench-marking! Is there someone you admire, someone who lives or upholds standards similar to yours? Maybe there is a brand or personality that you aspire to be on-par with. Doing some research into these brands and personalities and look at some industry and market averages on income, profitability and success will help you assess how your business is performing.
Step Two: Take an assessment of 2018. Just because the New Year is already here doesn’t mean that chance to do some honest reflection is gone too! You need to know what areas of your life and business did well and those that didn’t, what worked and what didn’t. Knowing this will help you establish what areas your or your business needs to improve in, or could improve in. Although you may already have an idea of the key areas, it’s important to regularly step back and review your business, identify your business’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and do some market research on the market and industry of your business to identify customer needs, trends and changes in the market or technology.
Step Three: Set REALISTIC goals! The biggest downfall to success is biting off more than you can chew. It’s easy to get into a Creative space and set down a 100 item list of goals and objectives, but how many of those are really likely to materialise, and more importantly how many of those are going to get you to the next step in your life and business legacy? Be honest with yourself about both what you want and then prioritise those goals that really mean a lot to you, because those are the goals you are really going to be able to get behind (even when the going gets tough)! After prioritising what’s important and what you want your 2019 to look like, take that vision and break it down into stages. I.e. How does this vision materialise stage-by-stage and what would need to happen at every stage, go as far as thinking of inputs and outputs you would expect at each stage. Take some time and think about the smaller steps required to accomplish each stage. If your goal is to have a profitable membership website with over a thousands members but you don’t even have your technology setup, you have a long way to go. So think of the site in stages, just like if you were to cook your favourite meal or plan the perfect holiday, and this will help you break that big picture into smaller, more manageable goals.
Step Four: The key challenge beyond setting the goals is then making sure you take action on them. It’s always hard to ensure that you are taking action, and when life begins to catch up with you, it can be even harder to ensure you are achieving the tasks you set yourself. Set yourself some non-negotiable deadlines and even more so tell someone else about the goals you have set so that they are also likely to keep you accountable. Better yet join a community where you will find like-minded people who are on the same journey, and that way you won’t feel alone and know that you are doing this collectively and that is far more likely to keep you motivated in achieving your goals.
Most importantly just remember that the time you invest in setting these foundations, setting goals and in devising a plan, get clear on what you really want in 2019, you are more likely to cross the end of 2019 having achieved everything you set yourself out to do!
